Comedians and Cars
If you follow us on Google Plus, you may have noticed a link recently that lets you tour Jay Leno’s garage and extensive personal car collection (he has over 200 in his possession). It turns out, Jay isn’t the only well known semi-retired comedian with a passion for automobiles. In fact, his friend Jerry Seinfeld is every bit his rival when it comes to car buying prowess. Seinfeld, however, has taken things a step further, taking his love of comedy and cars and uniting the two on his online series, the aptly titled “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” – where, you guessed it, Jerry Seinfeld escorts various comedians around in classic cars to go grab a cup of coffee.
It’s fitting then, that in the course of the remarkably successful web-series, Jerry would invite none other than car-man Jay Leno himself along for a ride. The car of choice? 1949 Porsche 356/2 – a car that at production, was built by-hand, right down to the hand-formed aluminum exterior. Only 52 were made this way, and now you get to watch Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno drive around in one (specifically, #40/52), talk cars, cracks jokes and talk about what it’s like living the life of a comedian.
The product is part classic car drool fest and part insightful documentary into the thought process of some of America’s most successful comedians. Something about the combination is spell binding. The comics that join him run the gamut, from the aforementioned Leno, to George Wallace, Aziz Ansari (Jerry actually drives Aziz’s monstrous tour bus around town in this episode), Jon Stewart, Sarah Silverman, Amy Shumer, and Leno’s late-night nemesis, David Letterman.
The car descriptions are enough to make your head spin, but Nothing escapes Seinfeld’s razor sharp wit – not even the cars’ paint colors, ranging anywhere from the dramatic (a 1971 Ferrari Daytona in “Fly Yellow” or 1959 Fiat Jolly in “Coral Orange” (with wicker seats!)) to the basic (1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 in “Medium Red”).
Now in it’s sixth season, you’ll find plenty of episodes online, free, just waiting for you to binge-watch.
